Gimuy/Cairns

June 15

485 nautical miles to Samarai Island, Papua New Guinea –  around 5 days sail out of Australia.

Prior to the occupation Gimuy/Cairns was home to Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people. One of the main things in the area that people from all over the world come to see is Great Barrier Reef – world’s largest iconic coral reef system that’s a World Heritage Site since 1981. Unfortunately, climate change and raising ocean temperatures have a detrimental effect on the health of this intricate ecosystem and coral bleaching of the Reef is widespread and progressively more frequent. The proposed Adani mine in the Galilee Basin would inevitably cause further destruction of the Reef. This would be the biggest coal mine in Australia and one of the biggest in the world, not only substantially raising carbon emissions, but directly destroying the Great Barrier Reef by dredging the area to expand a coal port. Adani mine would be detrimental to environment in a multitude of ways, which sparked Australia-wide campaign and protests against it.
