All boats were created equal..

On the journey north, Lazy Jack and crew have passed plenty of boats, though few as big and fast-moving as the navy warships moving around near Magnetic Island. The ships are off the Queensland coast as part of the Talisman Sabre military exercises. As the press release breathlessly announces, "This will be one of the largest gatherings of military ships to visit Brisbane for a single event in more than three decades, and will include vessels from the United States, New Zealand, Canada and...

Abbot Point

Abbot Point

Early on Monday morning, Lazy Jack and crew passed Abbot Point just north of Bowen. It was still dark at first, so we saw only bright orange lights. But as we went further north and the sun rose, we saw the terminal - a huge pile of black coal by a long jetty; offshore gigantic barges waiting to be loaded. The Abbot Pt coal terminal is owned by the Indian corporation Adani, and is where the coal from Adani's controversial proposed Carmichael mine in central Queensland would be exported. As far...

Original Nation passports signing ceremony with Uncle Lyle

Original Nation passports signing ceremony with Uncle Lyle

Aboriginal people have been experiencing incarceration, prison camps and prison islands on their own land at the hands of the colonial australian government. We know what it feels like to be refugees on our own land. This is why we are extending solidarity to the refugees on Manus Island by issuing Original Nation passports as a symbol of an invitation. We are calling on all Pacific nations to recognise our sovereignty and these passports and to allow those seeking asylum to use them to travel...

Shoalwater Bay

Shoalwater Bay

On Tuesday, Lazy Jack and her crew sailed past Shoalwater Bay on the central Qld coast. It was a quiet and pleasant sail, showing no indication of what will be taking place at the Shoalwater Bay military training area over the next few weeks. The Talisman Sabre joint military exercises will occur there from July 11-24 - "a biennial, bilateral Australian and United States training activity". This will include a very different kind of flotilla to our's - the latest military media release...

Lazy Jack at Emu Park

If arriving by boat makes one a boat person, Captain Cook was a boat person too. Why do we uncritically celebrate some historical boat arrivals whilst criminalising others? Next year, the Australian government will spend $48.7 million commemorating the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook's landing at Australia aboard the Endeavour. This will include $6.7 million to reenact the voyage up the east coast in a replica ship. The Sail 4 Justice journey retraces some of the same journey, as evidenced...

Messages to Manus Refugees

Messages to Manus Refugees

Many asylum seekers have languished in australian detention prisons for years, and have understandably lost hope in us. The result of the recent election is devastating for refugees on Manus, Nauru and those detained onshore. A growing number of men on Manus have attempted suicide and engaged in self-harm. Instead of showing compassion, the Federal Government responded with plans to repeal the Medevac bill, which was to provide much needed healthcare. Right now, Sail4Justice is on its way to...
